I can be quite cruel in my writing sometimes.
Sometimes.

I do not give the heroes of my stories too many breaks.
They always have lots of hardships even though sometimes they appear to have all the good luck in the world.

Life is about people. If you don't enjoy dealing with people you don't enjoy life.

And our hero here can not accept a world in which half the male population has to duel and kill another boy on their eighteenth birthdays. (He's 17 at the start of the film)

This cull helps to keep the population down in this futuristic world, and maybe just maybe prevents wars.
The surviving men are certainly happy, the woman on the other hand…
